FBI Live Scan is for U.S. citizens and green card holders located in the U.S. or its territories. Non-U.S. citizens use the direct-FBI EDO application (the FBI’s Electronic Departmental Order). Green card holders may qualify for either; the requesting party decides.

Fingerprint-only appointments do not include apostille. Embassy or consular legalization is quoted separately for the destination country. The receiving authority decides what documentation it accepts.
Results timing
Electronic FBI Background Check Results
Results typically arrive approximately 1 hour to 5 business days after successful electronic submission, and many customers receive them in approximately one hour. Timing is not guaranteed.
- EDO requests add mailing, FBI receipt and processing time. The electronic estimate does not apply to mailed packages.
- Federal Apostille begins after the eligible FBI report is issued and has a separate government timeline.

Does an FBI background check include apostille?
Only the clearly named fingerprint-plus-Federal-Apostille bundles include that service. FBI Live Scan and fingerprint-card services alone do not include apostille or embassy legalization.
How long do FBI background check results take?
For eligible FBI Identity History Summary requests, our working processing expectation is approximately 1 hour to 5 business days after successful electronic submission. Many Midwest Identity Services customers receive results in approximately one hour. Timing is not guaranteed. EDO requests include mailing, FBI receipt and processing time, and Federal Apostille begins after the eligible FBI report is issued. See how long FBI results take.
Is my own FBI record the same as an employer or licensing background check?
No. If a board, employer or agency requested fingerprints for licensing or employment, follow its submission instructions. Your own FBI Identity History Summary is a different request and does not replace the required employment or licensing background check. See FD-258 fingerprint cards for licensing and employment.
What if my fingerprints are rejected?
If the FBI rejects fingerprints that Midwest Identity Services captured because of print quality, we will retake your fingerprints free of charge within 90 days of your original appointment. Please bring your rejection notice to your retake appointment.
If the FBI requires a new request or a new government fee, that fee is not covered by the free retake and is paid by the client. Read the full Free Fingerprint Retake Policy.
